Proof of Work: ASIC Mining Definition

ASIC Mining Glossary

Proof of Work

Proof of work (PoW) requires miners to spend energy and computing power to produce valid blocks. Miners repeatedly hash block data until a result falls below a target set by network difficulty. The first valid result earns the right to add the block.

Why It Matters

It explains why electricity cost and machine efficiency are central to mining, and why hashrate is the first figure to check on a miner.

What to Watch For

Each proof-of-work blockchain has its own rules, hashrate unit, and reward economics. Most miners join a mining pool to receive steadier rewards.
